Africa is the second largest continent, occupying about a fifth of the Earth’s land area. A huge and diverse continent with more than 50 independent states, Africa contains vast natural resources.
The continent produces more than 60 metal and mineral products and is a major producer of some of the world’s most important minerals and metals including gold, platinum group element (PGE’s), diamonds, uranium, manganese, chromium, nickel, bauxite and cobalt, copper, lead and zinc.
Africa hosts about 30% of the planet's mineral reserves, including 40% of gold, 60% of cobalt and 90% of the world's platinum group metals (PGM) reserves. These facts give the continent an important and strategic place to explore for mineral opportunities.
The increase in exploration and mine development in Africa has been primarily focused on gold and diamond exploration. With the improving of base metal prices, this sector is experiencing an increase in activities.
These activities naturally attract service and safety companies. The AMSS 2008 is a platform to present new technologies and share expertise in this field.
